Short project description / project function
The Water Board Rijnland in the Netherlands needed a new head office. In this office there is room for 360 people and the building is designed for: optimization of the working climate, sustainable building and low energy consumption.
Total area of working space of the building 12'000 m2. There is also a separate plumbing for toilet water and storage of cold and warm water in the subsoil. http://www.rijnland.net. On another site full details can be found (in Dutch language) about energy, waste disposal, materials which have been used: http://www.dubocentrum.nl/projecten/project.php?reclD=31&item=samenvatting
Summary of experiences
People who work in the building are quite pleased with it. 70 % of the working time people can work in daylight which saves energy. Light from outside and the light of the electric lamps are reflected to get a equal distribution of the light in the rooms; workers are becoming less tired.
Project benefits
Lower energy consumption, less water consumption and the building can be easily taken apart and the individual construction parts can be easily reused. Per year 200 tons of CO2 are saved by the innovative energy system which is also cost effective (50'000 Euro savings on energy costs).
An energy storage was built using the underground (60 m deep pipes) of the building site Water use in toilet is 15 liter per person, which amounts to saving about 1.4 milion liters of drinking water per year, due to the use of rainwater or surface water.
Project level
Mature technology: All the available new technologies for a sustainable office are implemented in this building.
Financial scale
Building costs: 18'500'000 Euro (inclusive 11,5 % extra cost for sustainable building activities and materials).
Maintenance costs/year: 80'000 Euro
Environmental conditions
Leiden, Netherlands. River delta, sea climate
Altitude
Height above sea level: at sea level
Description of special local conditions
A little outside the centre of Leiden
Why is this ecological engineering
In this building a lot of available technologies in the field of water savings, energy savings and sustainable construction of the building has been implemented to create a more sustainable building.
