Why the Writers' Fund?
|
Many interesting cases of good Ecological Engineering are located in the developing world. Our newsletter needs good reports and articles about them. Yet, it is expensive and often not easy for our correspondents to travel and visit them. The small our planet seems at times, it is still rather big if it comes to reporting about a remote event or case study.
On the other hand, authors or journalists in a developing country may lack finances to actually go and visit an interesting case study or event if they don't see how they could be paid for this work. Our Writers' Fund aims to fill this gap. It has been set up mainly for young authors or journalists from developing countries interested in Ecological Engineering.
A maximum of 50 US$ is offered for an article that fully complies with our set of criteria (see below). This is not a lot of money in Western industrialized countries but it still can make a difference in the developing world!
Some ideas for articles that might get funded:
- an in-depth journalistic field research on an Ecological Engineering issue
- an inspiring interview with an experienced professor
- a report on the wastewater situation in a specific city and what Ecological Engineers can do about it
- ....
P.S.: If you are not that young and not from the developing world, you can still apply. However, funding is limited to USD 50 per article.

How to apply for funding?
|
Anyone interested in Ecological Engineering issues can formally apply for funding from the EcoEng-Newsletter Writers' Fund by sending in a proposal with a description of his/her idea to the editors of this website (currently, Andreas Schoenborn-Schaller).
Formally, the application needs to contain:
- your name and address
- your affiliation (= the institution or company you are working at)
- a short description of your planned article, explaining:
- What do you want to write about?
- Where is the topic of your article located?
- If applicable, when are you going to be on-site?
- Are you able to take photos of the site?
- What is your special interest the site/topic?
- What is the relevance of the site/topic for your country?
- Until when are you planning to send in the work?
In total, your application SHOULD not be longer than 1 A4 page. It MUST be in English language, just like the final article. And it MUST be sent in as attachment in Word format to:

Criteria for approval of your application
|
Based on the applications we receive, we will periodically decide what will be financed from the fund. Your applications can be sent in at any time. There are no deadlines. The criteria we will apply to the drafts are:
- does the topic fit into the scope of Ecological Engineering?
- is the idea interesting and relevant for the EcoEng-Newsletter?
- is the quality of the English adequate for the newsletter
- is the journalistic and scientific quality sufficient
- is the article new or has it been published elsewhere?
The decisions will be made rather quick and on an informal basis. Writers from developing countries will be preferred. There is no legal right for an article to be funded. If scope or quality of the final article deviate gravely from the idea the decision was based upon, we reserve the right to not publish work for which payment had been promised. In this hopefully rare case, no payment will be made.
In any case, payment will only be made after the finished work has been accepted.
