| 6 | Short project description / project function | The plant is a wastewater-fed aquaculture built for the management of domestic wastewater as a resource using a constructed food web of aquatic animals and plants. It is also used as a resource of heating energy for the school buildings. It was built for 100 p.e.
Its main goals and purposes are:
Stensund Folk College with its aquaculture shall serve as a model society of a sophisticated recycling concept of wastewater |
||
| 7 | Summary of experiences | The aquaculture has been very successful as a learning and awareness raising platform. It has created a lot of public interest and media coverage in Scandinavia. Approximately 3000 visitors per year are visiting the plant. It is also part of the curriculum of Stensund Folk College and has been subject of a number of student projects.
Technically, the plant treats 10 m3 of wastewater from the Folk College per day. The biomass harvested is about 2,000 kg wet weight per year, mostly as water plants. The value of biomass production (plants, animal feed, fish) was 24 Euros per p.e. year in 1999 (Guterstam, unpublished). In 1999, 80,000 kWh of heat were reused and exported to other buildings from the aquaculture (Guterstam, unpublished).
