| April 2, 2007 | Graduate Student Opportunity to Study Constructed Wetland Systems in Canada's Arctic Regions
We are looking for a Ph.D. student but will also consider a M.Sc. student to do a thesis project on the use of constructed wetlands in the treatment of municipal wastewater effluent in Canada's Arctic regions. The Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment at Fleming College has secured funding through the Canadian Secretariat for the International Polar Year to conduct research in three communities in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. Research activities will be focused on design optimization of treatment wetlands for Arctic conditions. Prior to field work, several pilot-scale constructed wetland systems will be developed at the CAWT at Fleming College in an environmental chamber capable of simulating Arctic environmental conditions. The research activities at the centre will focus on arriving at a prototype design specific to Arctic needs. Pilot scale systems to test these designs will then be built in communities in the Canadian Arctic while involving communities, scientists, local groups and individuals. These pilot systems will be monitored locally and publicized, encouraging community stewardship of water resources and further initiatives. Graduate student research can occur in a number of thematic areas including microbiology, water chemistry, system design, and/or lab mesocosm and field trials. Constructed wetland systems for wastewater treatment are an example of a sustainable, environmentally progressive technology that is in its infancy in Polar regions. This project will develop new engineering and technology solutions to assist Northern residents to adapt to changing settlement patterns and the associated wastewater treatment health issues that arise. The Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) at Fleming College promotes constructed wetlands and other innovative forms of wastewater treatment through applied research, education, and demonstration projects. Located at Fleming College in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, CAWT is at the centre of the school's state-of-the-art Environmental Technology wing. CAWT facilities include:
Focused primarily on cold-climate constructed wetland research, CAWT also offers education resources, research support, project design services and more. Graduate student research activities will take place under the supervision of Dr. Chris Metcalfe and other Trent University faculty in collaboration with Dr. Brent Wootton of the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment, Fleming College. Research activities can commence as early as May 2007 but applicants will be considered until the position is filled. Funding is secured for three years for graduate student support. Travel, accommodation, research, and other expenses are budgeted for as well. For more information on this and other graduate student opportunities please contact: |

| Jan. 22, 2007 | Staying safe online
Dear colleagues, even though this is not an ecological engineering topic, I'd like to raise your attention to a really important issue to us all: Safety while being online. Safety is always a concern in the internet these days. But how intense is the threat posed by hackers, spammers and other types of abusers really? A series of BBC articles shows that the danger is considerable. If you go online, be aware that within 15 minutes your computer will be detected and attacked. If you do not protect it, it will most likely be abused. Read more about.... ... how much attack traffic is around and what can happen to your PC: ... tips to help you stay safe online: ... how trade with stolen credit card numbers works: I hope this helps you a bit Andreas Schoenborn |

| Jan. 21, 2007 | ECOSUD-The Master's Programme in Ecotechnology and Sustainable Development
Mid Sweden University's website states: "Mid Sweden University offers education in Ecotechnology and Sustainable Development. This interdisciplinary international master's programme emphasizes both the practical and the conceptual aspects of ecotechnology, environmental science and sustainable development. Mid Sweden University is a young, energetic and modern educational establishment where students can thrive and develop their skills. Immersed in this intellectually positive atmosphere, the masters programme is evolving to address new environmental challenges. The program continues on the long tradition of environmental education in Östersund. Ecotechnology has been developed and practiced here since 1983, with its roots in the seventies in an environmental-engineering course. Those early environmental studies in Östersund have become a pool of inspiration for Swedish environmental education in general. The masters programme in Ecotechnology and Sustainable Development has so far attracted numerous students from around the world. Employers on the national and international scene recognize the environmental science expertise of the Mid Sweden University Masters program. Many of our students are currently working as environmental engineers, analysts or consultants, or they are enrolled in doctoral level studies pursuing their careers in environmental science. The master's programme in Ecotechnology and Sustainable Development at Mid Sweden University aims to build and strengthen the competence needed for a holistic approach towards sustainable development. The approach has a strong interdisciplinary focus on scientific, political, legal, economic and engineering aspects needed when facing environmental challenges."
