Sep. 13, 2004 Waterharvesting : A web discussion on a landscaped solution to water collection, filtering and recycling

The primary feature of this technique for waterharvesting is a 'dry creekbed'. This is a bed of rocks, gravels, sands and soils which can be sealed from, seeping into, or open to the landscape profile.

A system of subsurface creekbeds is used to direct stormwater and greywater or any wastefluid to landscape growing areas, while at the same time filtering and treating the water to remove contaminants and then recycling the treated water for non potable uses.

A internet discussion on this concept si taking place from Oct. 20-31, 2004 on http://www.iobbnet.org/news/e-sem-08.html. The "Waterharvesting" concept is presented by Paul Totterdell, Clearwater Environmental Design, Australia.

Jul. 14, 2004 The waterharmonica - rethinking wastewater and surface water

The Waterharmonica is a way of thinking to fill the gap between treated waste water and surface water. It is a way to transfer well treated waste water in a "healthy and useable" surface water. Waste water was "the best water you had", as it was expensive drinking water, only used to transport dirt.

The Waterharmonica aims on new integrated ecological engineering processes, by optimising multifunctional  constructed wetland processes, not only used for after treatment of the clear effluent from sewage treatment plants, but also to "biological" revitalize the water. The combination with cultivation of biomass, like Daphnia and fish, aimed on strengthening of natural values by using the nutrients from the waste water makes it a new practical form of ecological engineering.

The end of July 2004 there will be a special session on the Waterharmonica during the Intecol conference in Utrecht. The program features some well-known exponents of Ecological Engineering (Bob Gearheart, B.B.Jana, Karin Tonerski-Sundblad, to just name a few) and can be downloaded as PDF (192 kB).

Some more information on the idea can be found at http://www.waterharmonica.nl/index_english.htm

Jul. 3, 2004 Liquid Gold: How to Use Urine to Grow Plants (Safely!) Talk, mini-workshop and book release

When? 10:30-12 noon+, Sat., July 10
Where? 1120 Bancroft Street (near San Pablo Ave.), Berkeley, USA
Price: $15 donation - Proceeds help fund City Slicker Farm's urban farming demo programs
Who? Led by Carol Steinfeld and Nik Bertulis
To register: info@liquidgoldbook.com

Every day, we urinate nutrients that can fertilize plants that could be used for beautiful landscapes, food, fuel, and fiber. Instead, these nutrients are flushed away, either to be treated at high cost or discharged to waters where they overfertilize and choke off aquatic life.

Join us for a lighthearted but practical talk about how urine - which contains most of the nutrients in domestic wastewater and usually carries no disease risk - can be utilized as a resource. We'll discuss three ways to grow away urine - composting, urine-graywater system, and urine fertilizing - safely and without odors. We'll make a small urine- graywater planter and look at ways to make easy, inexpensive urine-diverting composting toilets.

Discounts will be available on urine diverters, dry urinals, and copies of Liquid Gold, as well as related books and plans.

Our setting is Green Fairy Farm, a micro-eden in Berkeley. Due to limited space, registration is limited.

The book, Liquid Gold, shows how urine is used worldwide to grow food and landscapes, while protecting the environment, saving its users the cost of fertilizer, and reconnecting people to the land and the nutrient cycles that sustain them. That’s real flower power! Liquid Gold features three ways to use urine hygienically and productively for plant growth, with studies that show the science behind this practice. Several advocates of urine diversion and their gardens are profiled, demonstrating that using urine for fertilizer is a feasible, safe, and cost-saving way to prevent pollution and save on fertilizer costs.

Presenters:

Liquid Gold author Carol Steinfeld is projects director for Ecowater Projects, a nonprofit project that informs the public about ecological wastewater management solutions. She is the co-author of The Composting Toilet System Book and Reusing the Resource: Adventures in Ecological Wastewater Recycling. Her articles have appeared in Natural Home Magazine, Mother Earth News, and Biocycle, among others.

Nik Bertulis is a world-roaming carpenter, inventor, activist, and ecological solutions advocate, who also assists at City Slicker Farm and Green Fairy Farm.

Apr. 6, 2004 WANTED: Sponsors for a Relaunch of the EcoEng-Newsletter

We, the editorial team of this website, are looking for sponsors that contribute funds for relaunching and maintaining the EcoEng-Newsletter in the future. Our offer: You become part of and visible to a dynamic community in a field that is on the brink of taking off.

The EcoEng-Newsletter - a brief description

The EcoEng-Newsletter (started 1999) is the all-electronic bulletin of IEES. Its main goal is to provide a "low threshold" way for Ecological Engineers to publish information about their work, thus promoting the ideas and methods of Ecological Engineering. The EcoEng-Newsletter is embedded within IEES' website "EcoEng-online" (note: the term "Ecological Engineering" is used in the community - it can also be called differently, e.g., Sustainable Environmental Engineering).

Have a look at the issue No.8 of Dec. 2003 for an impression.

Articles and news items are provided by our readers and by a group of 9 volunteer correspondents. They are briefly reviewed by a group of 3 co-editors which is mainly volunteer work. The newsletter has seen 8 issues. No. 9 is planned for May 2004. There are no paper copies distributed, everything is online. The budget has been minuscule up to now.

Despite the infrequent publication, we have gathered a rather stable readership over the years. Each issue of the EcoEng-Newsletter has 800 to 1'000 readers. In January 04 we had 4'000 visitors on EcoEng-online. There's also a mailing list of 1'200 adresses. The size of the community can be estimated to be around 1'000 - 1'500.

Our goals for the next 5 years!

With our work we have created a good basis for futher development. In the next years we want to drastically increase the number of community members, and reach the following goals:

1. Further professionalize the EcoEng-Newsletter: We need a part-time editor and some administrative support. The reviewing and publishing work has been done in everybody's spare time up to now. The issues have sometimes appeared with a delay due to that.

2. Promote the creation of a rich collaborative online community on our new "myNetWorks" course and community environment (see http://www.mynetworks.org). A strong focus of mynetworks is the collaboration with the developing world.

3. Develop the EcoEng-Newsletter into a major marketing tool for mynetworks. There will, e.g., be monthly chats in mynetworks.org about articles from the EcoEng-Newsletter. Our aim is to increase the size of the mynetworks community and of our readership to 5'000 - 10'000 people.

Your benefit from a becoming a sponsor!

Ecological Engineering is on the brink of taking off. You will be a visible player in the dynamic growth process expected for the next few years. In concrete (the items depend on the degree of your committment):

  • your logo will be visible on the homepage of IEES...
  • ... and on the issues of the newsletter
  • we can offer a regular section in the newsletter informing about your company or institute (text will have to be contributed by yourself)
  • as a sponsor you may place free ads for job vacancies in our newsline or integrate offers published online elsewhere

With your contribution you will help to run the newsletter, e.g., allow professional editing, layouting and publishing work. We'd also like to pay some of our correspondents in the developing world. There will still be volunteer work alongside.

If you are interested, please contact . I'm looking forward to your response.

With best regards from Lucerne, Switzerland

Andreas Schoenborn

Apr. 6, 2004 WANTED: Two new correspondents for the EcoEng-Newsletter

We are looking for two new volunteer correspondents for the EcoEng-Newsletter, the biannual all-electronic periodical of IEES (International Ecological Engineering Society).

Ideally you should be a young graduate interested in the field of Ecological Engineering. This encompasses, e.g., constructed wetlands, ecological sanitation, sustainable architecture, sustainable planning, landscape ecology, permaculture, river restoration and other fields.

Being a correspondent can be a door opener for you to seniors in the field. We offer an official letter of support, a free membership in IEES and a free subscription to the journal "Ecological Engineering" for your work. We expect from you to contribute articles and news items to every new issue of the EcoEng-Newsletter. You need to make a committment for at least a year.

If you like to express your ideas in a written format, this might be your opportunity.

Please check http://www.iees.ch or contact me for more information
