Dec. 13, 2006 Waterharmonica project seeks several students for a trainee ship in 2006- 2007

Ruud Kampf writes:

For a number of years the Waterboard Hollands Noorderkwartier (www.hhnk.nl) has been working, in close cooperation with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and TNO-Den Helder, on the development of the "kwekelbaarsjes" process, a special food-chain oriented constructed wetland to grow usable biomass combined with water quality enhancement (www.rekel.nl/kwekelbaarsjes).

One of the units in this process is the Daphnia-growing unit. Research has proven that Daphnia feed on activated sludge particles thus preventing algae bloom. Research has been carried out in the experimental field with four 2 m3 mesocosms and four 40 m3 ponds on the sewage treatment plant Everstekoog on the island of Texel. In the meantime a new experimental set up has been constructed on STP Horstermeer, near Amsterdam.

The research will be continued in 2007 - 2008 as a part of my PhD study, with experiments on the STP Horstermeer. In this research project also the Universiteit van Amsterdam (Daphnia food studies), the Technische Universiteit Delft and Waternet (formerly Dienst Water en Riolering), Amsterdam will be involved. NIOZ on Texel on will participate with their newly developed method to use chitobiase activity as a measure for Daphnia activity. Finally contacts has been laid for a long lasting cooperation with the Concorsi de la Costa Brava and the Girona University in Spain. A number of experiments will be focus on monitoring the Daphnia ponds in the new Aqualân in Grou

Students wanted for the experimental period 2007/2008:

* to run experiments on STP Horstermeer and on STP Grou, plus Universiteit van Amsterdam
* to carry out research on Daphnia and algae (biology of Daphnia, feeding behaviour; harvesting techniques, how to assess population dynamics with chitobiase activity, etc.); -
* update the project internet site www.waterharmonica.nl

Nov. 23, 2006 Announcement: Global Leakage Technology Summit

LONDON BUSINESS CONFERENCES ANNOUNCES THE SECOND IN A SERIES OF GLOBAL SUMMITS ON WATER LEAKAGE:

GLOBAL LEAKAGE TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT 2007 -adopting the most effective strategy for water efficiency and leakage management

25th + 26th  January 2007, with a pre-conference workshop on 24th January, at the Hotel Russell, London

The professional standard of the first Global Leakage Summit, held in London in January 2006, was very high, receiving acclaim from presenters, delegates and exhibitors alike. Following this success London Business Conferences is now preparing a second Summit, to be held in January 2007.

Globally, water demand is rising and resources are diminishing. The problem of water loss and leakage is a perennial one, and utility operators need a strategic approach to tackle it. The 2007 summit examines case studies from utility practitioners worldwide - describing their strategies and programmes for leakage management and water efficiency. Together, these programmes form a strategy for restoring a potentially huge lost resource.

The pre-conference workshop, facilitated by Ewan Group, will concentrate on Œasset management planning and leakage strategy development&Mac226;, and will be followed by a site visit to view Thames Water's innovative Smart DMA&Mac226; project.

The conference sessions will include an international panel discussion to review the alternative management options being practised internationally. An industry and regulator panel discussion will discuss the thorny issue of economic leakage models and leakage targets set against a background of social and environmental effects and regional supply/demand issues.  Our regulator panel includes:

Dr Melinda Acutt - Director of Network Regulation, OFWAT

Dr David King - Director of Water Management, Environment Agency

Peter Jiggins - Head of Branch, Drinking Water Quality and Water Conservation, DEFRA

Dennis Dellow -Network Manager, Northumbrian Water South

A cutting edge&Mac226; technology session will appraise the latest developments for monitoring and detecting leaks, particularly in plastic pipes.

Speakers will include senior practitioners from UK and international utilities &Mac246; UK utilities represented include:  Anglian Water, Bristol Water, Northumbrian Water, Scottish Water, Severn Trent Water, South West Water, Thames Water, United Utilities and Veolia Water.  Some of our international speakers are:

Bambos Charalambous (Cyprus). Head of Technical Services, Lemesos, who will share experiences of how the Water Board of Lemesos has implemented state of the art technology.  Bambos is also Chairman of the IWA Water Loss Task Force.

Francisco Paracampos (Sao Paulo).  Director of Operations in one of the world&Mac226;s mega cities, where pressure management has been installed on a huge scale providing huge benefits.

Hannes Buckle (Johannesburg).  Water Management Strategist, Rand Water, where water conservation programmes and programmes to stop illegal connections are high priority.

Francisco Cubillo (Madrid).  Director of Operations of one of the driest areas of Europe, which is currently experiencing a drought.  Francisco is also Chairman of the IWA Specialist Group on Efficient Operations Management

Bob Taylor (Abu Dhabi).  Deputy Managing Director, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, ADWEA, will share experiences on the investment priorities for leakage and rehabilitation strategies in a water scarce country with high water costs.

Aug. 22, 2006 PhD position: Building surfaces for improvement of air and ecological quality of in- and outdoor climate

Delft University of Technology
Section of Materials Science and Sustainable Construction

Background of the project
Due to industrialization and mobility of the modern society the quality of our environment is under pressure. The air contains polluting substances, which are potentially, and actually, harmful for people, the biosphere as a whole and even for our physical infrastructure and buildings. At the same time it is well known that vegetation, and to a certain extent also building materials, have, or potentially have a certain capacity to absorb or neutralize harmful species (dust, NOx, CO2, etc.). The purifying capacity of vegetation and of surfaces of buildings, walls and slabs has hardly been studied yet. As a consequence of this these purifying properties are not considered explicitly in the design of civil engineering projects.

Aim of the project
The aim of this research project is to develop a coupling between measures to improve the air quality, promoting uptake of NOx and CO2, reduction of aerosol concentration in the air, reduction of waste material and stimulating reuse of material in view of reduction of harmful emissions. The focus will be on the design of the outer surface with a depth of a few millimeters up to several centimeters of civil engineering structures and buildings with the potential to improve the quality of the air and the ecological quality (i.e. variety of species). The development of devices to determine the efficiency of purifying measures will be considered as well.

Required profile of the candidate
The PhD candidate must have:
  • MSc degree in Materials Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering or Applied Physics
  • Modelling experience
  • Knowledge of applied chemistry
  • Prepared to work in multidisciplinary research teams, both in industry and the university
  • Skills in English

This project is financed by the Delft Research Centre for Sustainable Urban Areas
